Olympus SZ-20 is a digital camera designed for photographers looking for a camera whose zoom will not be restrictive, and sports events fans who want to record the action of an athlete. This camera contains a 12.5x optical zoom, 16 megapixels.

As well as ensuring a comfortable hold Olympus has made a stab at future proofing its model by including a 3D shooting mode, being the first stills camera manufacturer outside of those that also produce compatible TVs (Sony, Panasonic), and Fujifilm’s standalone true 3D model in the FinePix W3, to do so. Unlike the Fuji, the Olympus features neither two lenses nor two sensors with which to produce its single stereoscopic image. Instead it merely takes two separate images and combines them. A ghostly version of the first image taken remains on the screen whilst the user lines up the second shot. The camera then automatically fires its shutter when it deems the images sufficiently in sync – so in this respect Olympus keeps things simple.
The Olympus menus are updated to give quick access to common functions, using the scroll wheel on the back of the camera. The full menu options are then accessible using the menu button. They are split into: two photo menus, one video, one playback, and three setup menus. Olympus cameras feature an option called “pixel mapping” this can map out hot pixels if there are any, without having to send the camera back to the manufacturer for repair. There’s another new option in the last setup menu called “Data repair” – this repairs the meta-data for “Event view” and “Photo surfing”, two of the playback views available. Photo surfing lets you view by date, by shooting mode, by person or pet.
With contrast detection auto focus on board, photos and Full HD 1920 x 1080 pixels video are framed and reviewed via 3-inch LCD with better than average 460k-dot resolution, with light sensitivity settings starting lower than most at ISO 80 and topping out at ISO 3200. Fortunately the optical zoom can be accessed when shooting movies, but its movement is noticeably slower and smoother when the record button is hit – no bad thing as it avoids lurching transitions. One might raise an eyebrow at the fact Olympus has crammed 16.8 megapixels in total on a 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor, the same size chip as used by the 12.1 megapixel Nikon S9100, so increased image noise is a possible issue here.

The Olympus SZ-20 stores its images and movies on Secure Digital cards, including the higher-capacity SDHC and SDXC types. It’s also compatible with Eye-Fi’s wireless-capable SD cards, for cable-free upload directly from the camera. Power comes courtesy of a proprietary battery pack which, usefully, can be charged via the camera’s USB connection–great if you already have other devices that use a USB charger, or will be bringing a notebook computer from which you can charge the camera directly.
